“Fantastic time! I enjoyed every single moment. Six months in Sangam made me act with confidence. I sincerely felt ’sistership’ with 10 million girls. I swear to continue developing with Guiding through these wonderful motivations.”
Miran Park, South Korea,
Programme Assistant – 2006
“In ten months, I worked with people from nine different countries and shared Sangam with participants from 20 different countries. I got to volunteer with wonderful enthusiastic teachers in Door Step School and teach English to a lively, loveable bunch of boys. I got to buy turbans, learned how to play cricket, got a motorbike license, attended different religious ceremonies and learned Hindi.”
Helen Concannon, Ireland, Assistant Programme Manager - 2003/04
“Working at Sangam is an unforgettable chance to learn intensely about both another culture as well as world guiding. Each day is completely different from the last bringing new challenges and rewards. Likewise each experience and chance to meet new visitors is a reminder that Guiding and Scouting is shared by women all over the world. Nowhere is this clearer."
Sarah Newitt, Canada
Programme Assistant – 2005
“Being at Sangam has taught me so much about the variations on Guiding and Scouting around the world – uniform, traditions, songs, and community projects – while at the same time demonstrating the things that make us one – the commitment to making the world a better place, the spirit of adventure, and friendship to all.”
Katherine Punteney, United States of America, Programme Manager - 2002-06
Miriam Boehm, Deutschland, Programme Assistant – 2004
I love being in Sangam, its such a peaceful place, though there is always lots to do and people to chat to. Both local domestic staff and the Guiding Staff are absolutely fantastic. It’s always fascinating to learn more about Guiding and Scouting in different countries and cultures. When I was a young guide leader, I dreamed about guiding as a profession – now my dream came true for six month! And I think the best way to really get to know a country and its culture is by working there. And that’s just what I do now.
Sabine Kuster, Switzerland, Programme Assistant - 2005
“Working at Sangam is an adventure of self-discovery – immersing yourself in Indian culture, working, living and socializing with the international staff, being embraced by the world friendship of Guiding – I feel like I can only but come away from here a better, more tolerant person.” “The fear I had about coming to Sangam and India was communicating in English, but when I came to Sangam everyone was very supportive while I expanded my vocabulary and now I feel very confident speaking English. This is an example of how the Sangam team works like a big family by supporting each other!”
Geraldine Haack, New Zealand, Programme Assistant - 2005
Miriam Boehm, Germany, Programme Assistant - 2004
“Coming to Sangam offers a multi-cultural experience different from anything that most people have ever had before. Learning about India including its culture and traditions in a multi cultural Guiding and Scouting environment is very inspiring. Yet often a more dramatic effect can occur in the years after the time spent at Sangam. A visit here can alter the way you come to look at the world and how you view your place in it. After my first visit here, not only did I take away global friendships and colourful memories, but as time passed I discovered inner strengths and desires based on the experiences I had here that have led me on a journey to live, travel and work both at home and overseas in a field very different from where I first thought I would go.”
Rachel Parker, Canada
Deputy World Centre Manager 2002-05
“I am here to represent India, to portray its rich heritage and its strength of unity in diversity, to give a clearer picture to foreign participants of the different types of ‘set ideas’, they have of my country. I enjoy demonstrating how to drape a Sari, design rangoli, mehendi and various other traditions of India. I take the participants for sari shopping, visiting the bazaar, temples & markets. I also help in organizing the different events at Sangam."
Darshana Pawaskar, India, Programme Assistant, 2005
Working at Sangam provides a chance to become involved with one of the biggest youth organizations in the world, and to become intrinsically linked to the initiatives and visions that are at the heart of WAGGGS and the international guiding community.
Hayley Nicholls, United Kingdom,
Assistant Programme Manager – 2005/06
