The Community Volunteer Programme (Flyer) at Sangam World Centre offers a unique opportunity to live the WAGGGS mission whilst staying in the supportive environment of Sangam World Centre. After an extensive two-week orientation programme, participants are placed with an Indian community organization to volunteer for three months.

Share

Share your energy with children as you teach, facilitate, nurture and create opportunities. Volunteer four days a week for three months in your individual placement with an Indian community organisation. Use your skills to lead games and songs, teach English children or adults.

Learn

An educational programme includes a two-week orientation programme to introduce you to Indian culture, living in Pune and community development issues. Throughout the programme, activities will explore Indian culture and community development. Volunteers will meet weekly to share their experiences and questions with each other and with Sangam’s Programme Coordinators. Additionally, weekly courses will provide an introduction to Hindi, the national language.

Enjoy

Pune, a city of 5 million, offers many opportunities for shopping, eating out, dancing, and sightseeing. Weekends are free for exploring Pune and the surrounding area.
Volunteers will also have the opportunity to join in parts of Sangam’s international events such as campfires and international evenings. Enjoy meeting Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from Around the World.

Trust

Throughout the programme, advice and support will be provided. Volunteers can be confident in the knowledge that they have the support and experience of a well-established Girl Guiding/ Girl Scouting centre to keep them comfortable.

In 2006/07 women from the UK, Ireland, and Canada participated, enjoying the fun of international Guiding, the chance to learn deeply about another culture, and the chance to give of themselves. Their projects included teaching English and basic computer skills, providing care for infants and toddlers, sharing games and songs, assisting teachers in créches, establishing income-generating projects and offering general help to the organizations in various ways.

As three participants from the UK shared:

Indian life has changed the way I shall look at all sorts of things in the future.
Janet Gooch

Good value for money compared to other ’gap year’ projects.  Excellent chance to truly appreciate what it’s like to live a different part of the world. I have very much enjoyed the overall experience. Penelope Calver

I am more confident and independent. It has taught me about other cultures.
Helen Mackenzie

Members of WAGGGS over the age of 18 are eligible to participate.

Please help us to spread the word about this programme to the outstanding Girl Guide and Girl Scout members in your community.
